Depending on my schedule and other commitments, I love doing school visits—both in-person and (especially these days) remotely.
My visits center around helping kids delight in wordplay and all the unexpected ways we can combine letters and words to tell stories, express emotions, and make people laugh. By sharing my own ridiculous creations and working with them to invent new ones on the spot, I want to inspire them to think, “I wonder what I can do!” so they’re excited to make their own discoveries and creations.
I always try to make sure my presentations (both large talks and smaller workshops) are full of energy and laughter—the latter of which seems to come mostly at my own expense. Most of my experience is in the K-6 grade range, but I gladly run workshops for older groups as well. Given enough time, I can try to tailor my talks to whatever topics the students are currently engaged in.
I know remote teaching and learning can be especially challenging sometimes. I’m happy to help out by popping into online classrooms for shorter visits: I’ll talk a bit about poetry, read a poem or tell a story or two, answer any burning questions, and hopefully shake kids out of that zoom-zombie trance that can overtake the best of us!
